Donald Trump has so far nominated two new Supreme Court Justices during his presidency, and both of them are Jesuit trained. The first nominee was Neil Gorsuch, who was raised as a Roman Catholic, but is now, at least nominally, Episcopalian:
Justice Neil Gorsuch is the first member of a mainline Protestant denomination to sit on the Supreme Court since the retirement of John Paul Stevens in 2010. He also has strong ties to the Roman Catholic Church. Neil and his two siblings, brother J.J. and sister Stephanie, were raised as Roman Catholics and attended weekly Mass. Neil Gorsuch later attended Georgetown Preparatory School, a Roman Catholic Jesuit school in North Bethesda, Maryland, from which he graduated in 1985. Gorsuch’s wife, Louise, is British-born; the two met while Neil was studying at Oxford. Louise was raised in the Church of England. The two married at St. Nicholas’ Anglican Church in Henley-on-Thames.
When the couple returned to the United States they started attending Holy Comforter, an Episcopal parish in Vienna, Virginia, where he also volunteered as an usher. Church records indicate that the Gorsuches were members of Holy Comforter. He later attended attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado, considered a liberal church because it kept an open-door policy for the LGBT community prior to legislation establishing gender preference equality laws. The Episcopal Church and the Church of England are both members of the Anglican Communion, which considers itself to be both Catholic and Protestant but rejects papal authority. After marrying in a non-Roman Catholic ceremony and joining an Episcopal church, Gorsuch has not publicly stated if he considers himself a Roman Catholic who is also a Protestant or simply a Protestant.
So, now “only” five, as opposed to six, of the nine Supreme Court Justices are Roman Catholic. That is, if you can really count Gorsuch as a protestant. Anyway, he graduated from the Jesuit Georgetown Preparatory School, and so did Trump’s second nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who is a Roman Catholic like his predecessor Anthony Kennedy.
What’s more, they attended that same Jesuit school at the same time. Quite a coincidence, isn’t it? And, as it happens, the current Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, also graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School, and later earned his J.D. from Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic University in America, and the Jesuit power base in the USA.
The four other Catholic Justices in the Supreme Court are:
Chief Justice John Roberts – Roberts has served as an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University Law Center.
Clarence Thomas – Thomas graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, a Jesuit university in Worcester, Massachusetts. Earlier in life Thomas attended Catholic schools, and briefly also a Catholic seminary in Missouri.
Sonia Sotomayor – Sotomayor has been an associate of Jesuit priest Joseph A. O’Hare, who was a long time president of Fordham University, and also a member of the New York based elite think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
The Rev. Joseph O’Hare, a Jesuit priest and the retired president of Fordham University who served with Sotomayor on a New York City campaign finance review council, told Catholic News Service that he knew the high court nominee in the late 1980s. She was indeed a practicing Catholic, he said, adding that he has no reason to think that has changed.
The remaining three Justices are Jewish: Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose husband Martin D. Ginsburg was a professor at Georgetown University Law Center. So, yet another Jesuit connection.
Antonin Scalia, who was replaced by Gorsuch, was a devout Roman Catholic. He graduated from a Jesuit high school and later from Georgetown University with B.A. Scalia was allegedly a member of Opus Dei, the secretive Catholic organization. And according to Matthew Fox, a former member of the Dominican Order, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are both Opus Dei members, and possibly even Chief Justice John Roberts:
Yes, it’s widely known that Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas belong to Opus Dei—and that Justice Thomas Roberts may also be a member. Another Opus Dei member, former CIA director William Casey, gave millions of dollars to the Vatican and to the ultra-conservative Legionaries of Christ. Also, Daniel Ellsberg recently told me that some of the ranking commanders of our military are also Opus Dei. And what can we say about a whole new crop of right wing Catholic politicians such as Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum?
